Cyprus is a the third largest island in the Mediterranean, after Sicily and Sardinia. Cyprus is located in the eastern Mediterranian, south of Turkey and west of Syria.

Cyprus became an independent Republic on August 16, 1960 on the basis of the 1959 Zurich and London Agreements negotiated by Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom.

Nicosia, now called Lefkosia, is located in the center of Cypress. Summers are hot and dry. Most rain falls between November and March.
